Unit 3 Projects

Slab Building with Slump Mold

Sgrafifto

Plan:

Plan:

For this piece I want to make a plate using a slump mold. I want to underglaze this piece so I can do a design

My plan for this piece was to create a simple plate with a sgrafifto design. I wanted to underglaze the piece, then carve out a sand dollar.

To begin this piece I started with a slab of clay and used a slump mold for the shape. After I was satisfied with the shape, I used a turquoise underglaze to paint my base color. I then let that dry for a bit and practiced my design. After it was dry enough I carved out the shape of a sand dollar. Once it was to my liking, I put it on the rack to be fired. After it was fired I used a clear low fire glaze then fired it again. I am very proud of this piece, but I wish I spent more time smoothing the plate.

For this piece I started by getting a slab of clay and form it to a plastic lid. This piece was definitely a work in progress, and I had to re-do it about 3 times. I finally decided to switch to a glass plate, and that ended up working. After I formed the shape, I used Underglaze to make my design. I decided to do a simple apple design with a red rim. After this was fired for the first time, I added a clear coat and fired it again. If I could do anything differently, I would spend more time forming the shape and smoothing it out

Relief Carving

Plan:

My plan for this piece was to create a simple jewelry dish and use the relief carving technique to carve out a flower. I did not know what colors I would use yet when planning this piece out.

Coil Building

Plan:

My plan for this piece is to form a simple pot, and add coils to make a design. I hope to do an underwater theme.

Description:

For this piece I started by smoothing out a slab of clay and carving out a circle. I wanted the slab to be on the thicker side so I could carve out my design. After the slab was to my liking, I traced out my design. After that was done, I began carving. I carved out the clay all around my design to make a 3D look. Once it was smoothed to my liking, I put it on the shelf to be fired. Once it was fired, I used a low fire glaze to glaze my piece.

For this piece I decided instead of forming my pot out of coils, I will use coils to add a design. To start this piece I made a simple pitch pot, I then used the extruder to make coils. I added 3 different types of coils to the outside of my pot. To create an ocean theme, I also added two starfish, seaweed, and sand dollars. After I fired this piece I used low fire glazes to add the colors of my choice. I am very proud of this piece and satisfied with the outcome

Slab with Darts

Plan:

For this piece I want to make a simple cup using the slab with darts method

Choice Piece

Plan:

Description:

To start this piece I used a rolling pin to make an even slab of clay. I then cut out a square and started to form the shape of a cup. I cut out darts in the bottom of the cup to put together and form the bottom. I then smoothed it out to form the shape I wanted. After this piece was fired the first time, I added a turquoise low fire glaze and fired it again. I am very satisfied with this piece and wouldn't do anything differently.

For this piece I want to make a little surf board I can use as decoration.

Description:

For this piece, I started by rolling out a slab of clay and carving out the shape of a surfboard. I then smoothed out the sides and added the middle detail. I then fired this piece. After it was fired I used an orange and blue low fired glaze. I am very proud of this simple piece and really like it.
