Unit 4 Projects

Monster

Plan:

My plan for this piece was to try and replicate the drawling that was given to me. I hoped to make it as identical as possible

Description:

This piece definitely consisted in a lot of trial and error. I started by creating the body by hollowing out a chunk of clay and smoothing it to my liking. I then did the same thing with the head, just a little smaller. I could then attach the two pieces by scoring and slipping. After I had the base done, I moved on to the legs and arms. Once those were attached I could add all the smaller details like the wings, ears, tail, etc. I decided to carve the face into the head so I could then go over it with glaze. Once this piece was fired I then used a low fire glaze and tried to match the colors as best as I could. Glazing this piece was definitely the hardest part because of all the pieces. Overall I am pretty satisfied with this piece, but with I used different colors of glaze.

Series of 4

Plan:

My plan for this piece was to create a series of 4 small plates. I hope to make them all different citruses.

Description:

To start this piece, I decided to use the terracotta clay. I began by creating each plate at a time, trying to make them all the same size and thickness. Once they all were to my liking, I then used a tool to outline my design. I decided to use Under glaze on these pieces so I could get a more accurate design. I did not want the color of the clay to be seen, so I made sure to cover them in a few layers of white glaze. After the white, I painted each one with their individual colors. After the first fire, I used a clear glaze on top of the original Underglaze. I am very satisfied with this set and would not do anything differently.

Alebrije

Plan:

My plan for this piece was to create a fox alebrije.

Description:

To begin this piece I started by making the body. I hollowed out a ball of clay and formed it to the shape I wanted. I then added the head by doing the same thing. After the base, I added limbs such as ears, legs, and a tail. I then went in and added small details to add to the piece. Once this piece was fired, I used acrylic paint to make it an Alebrije. I tried to use bright colors and dots to add an effect. I also used paper to create a background of trees and bushes. I am overall very proud of this piece, but if I would do anything differently I would create different legs.

Lidded Box

Plan:

My plan for this piece was to create a small bowl with a lid. I want it to be big enough for me to store something in it

Description:

To begin this piece, I started by creating a simple pinch pot with Terracotta clay. I then began to form the lid and making sure it fit properly. I then added clay on the lid to make sure it would be secure. I also added a ball of clay on the top. After this piece was fired I then decided to glaze. I chose a glaze I had not used before to go out of my comfort zone. This was my first time using terracotta clay, so it definitely was a learning experience. I am overall very happy with this piece and the one thing I would do differently is choose a different color of glaze.
